Libraries Rock! Summer Reading 2018

It’s almost that time again! Summer Reading is just around the corner! We will be starting our summer reading programs on Tuesday, June 5. We will have events every Tuesday. All ages are welcome at the 10am and 1pm program, and the 6pm programs are for ages 9 and up.

Any child who attends the program needs to be registered. Once registered, they will recieve a packet that contains a schedule, a letter to parents, bookmarks, and a reading log. The reading logs are for each child to keep up with the hours they’ve read. At 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 hours, they can come in and recieve a prize! You can log however you wish (writing down time read, using stickers, etc.), but just make sure you show us the proof.

We will also be having a special summer long contest! Come by the library to find out how you can participate!

If you have any questions, please let us know! Come by the library, call us at 770-775-7524, or check our Facebook page!

Adult Craft Days at the JBCPL

Did you know that your library is now offering Adult Craft Days? Every second Saturday of the month, we host a craft event that is open to those 18 and older. It’s free of charge and all supplies are provided. The only thing you need to do is sign up at the library. WE have a sign up list that we keep up until the day of the program.

This month, we are having a guest presenter and we will be making DIY bath bombs!

For those who don’t know, bath bombs (sometimes called bath fizzies) are items that you drop into your tub after you’ve run your bath water. The reaction between the water and the ingredients in the bath bomb causes it to bubble and fizz until the bath bomb is completely dissolved. They can have a variety of scents and colors.

For our bath bombs this month, we are offering two scents: chocolate and strawberry, in honor of Valentines Day. However, if you sign up, don’t feel like you are restricted to just those two scents. Bring your own essential oils and you can customize your scents. Right now, with all the sinus congestion and stuffy noises, eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil makes for a nice bath bomb that helps you breathe a little easier.

We are not offering any special colors (sorry!) but there are plenty of resources online that will show you how to color your bath bombs in a way that won’t stain your tub.

So, if you are interested in participating in this month’s Adult Craft Day (which will be on February 10 at 10:30a), come by the library and sign up. All we are asking for is your name, phone number, and/or email. We will only contact you if we are cancelling the program! We are limited to the first 24 people for this month’s program.

For March’s Adult Craft Day, we will be painting terra cotta flower pots in time for your spring planting. Again, you must sign up in advance. It will held on March 10th at 10:30a. The limit for this program will be 24 as well. Sign up list will be available on February 12th or 13th.

New Hours and New Events

Hey everyone!

It’s been a bit, but we’ve been in full swing at the library. With Summer Reading, Back to School, and more, it’s been a little crazy, but a whole lot of fun at the Jackson-Butts County Public Library.

We have a few updates and upcoming events to share with you.

First, the library hours have recently changed. We are now open until 8p on Tuesdays and Thursdays only! Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, we are open until 6p.

Second, our Family Craft Nights are returning! Our first one will be held in the later part of August (date still to be decided). We will let everyone know, both here and on our facebook page (click here for our Facebook page).

Third, we are in the process of planning several more programs for the upcoming solar eclipse. We will have at least two more (one for the general public and one aimed primarily for the younger ones). When we have firm dates, we will let you know. We are still waiting to hear back from the program organizers.

For those who have heard rumors, yes, we do have solar eclipse viewing glasses. We will be handing them out only at programs and the week leading up to the eclipse. We are trying to encourage everyone to come to at least one of the programs, and we only have a limited supply of the glasses. So, please, make sure to check out our programs! And you may get enough for your household, but we ask that you only take what you really need. This will allow us to provide glasses to as many people as possible. If you have any questions about the solar eclipse programs, feel free to call the library (770-775-7524) or message us on Facebook.

Summer Readers: don’t forget, you can pick up your reading certificates at the library anytime. Also, don’t forget to log your hours and come claim your prizes! They are all here at the library!

Did you know?

Did you know that your child could get free tickets just for reading? The Georgia Public Library Service has partnered with our Georgia sports teams to offer children (grades K-12) free tickets if they read books!

The Atlanta Braves Home Run Readers program requires that children read on book on sportsmanship or sports (suggested reading list is available online), complete an online activity, and recieve a certificate. This certificate is then brought into the library where we will give you a code to redeem for free tickets! (One ticket per child!) You must redeem the codes at least 48hrs before the game you wish to attend. Visit to find out more, or swing by the library and we’ll help you out!

The Atlanta Hawks’ Check It Out Reading Challenge requires a little more from your child. They have to read 5 books, but it can be any book that your child chooses. You must go online to fill out the registration form after your child reads the books. The deadline to read is August 26, 2017, and ticketing information will be emailed out after October 5, 2017. In order to recieve the one free child’s ticket, an adult ticket must be purchased. Visit for more information.

Finally, the newest partnership is with the new hockey team from Atlanta, the Atlanta Gladiators! Their Hat Trick for Reading Challenge requires kids to read at least 3 books from the library. Then, you need to go online and fill out the registration form. The deadline is September 22, 2017, and ticketing information will be sent out after September 29, 2017. The free child ticket does requires the purchase of an adult ticket. There is not choice when selecting game dates. Visit to find out more.

We hope to see everyone at the Jackson-Butts County Public Library soon! Don’t forget to sign up for our Summer Reading Program and check out our awesome programs!
